The JSANDS project mid-term workshop was held in Irbid city on the 27th of November, 2019. A total of 150 participants including directors of the five implementing hospitals, paediatricians, obstetrics and gynecologists, senior medical residents, registered nurses, and midwives attended the workshop.
The project director introduced the project to the participants, presented achievements that has been in place so far, success stories and challenges. He discussed the reasons for Jordan not achieving the Millennium Development Goal 3 “Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate” by 2015. Moreover, he explained the opportunity of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Target 3.2) of reducing the neonatal mortality that would be achieved if JSANDS interventions are implemented. The project director demonstrated the usefulness and functionality JSANDS in terms of simplicity, flexibility, sensitivity, representativeness, timeliness, and stability.

The JSANDS team highlighted the most common causes of preventable neonatal deaths and stillbirths across the five hospitals and the modifiable factors. Moreover, the team showed some initiatives from the Death Review Committees within the participating hospitals to decrease the preventable deaths as much as possible and improve the overall survival rate of neonates.
All participants including the focal points in each hospital showed their commitment in using JSANDS and implementing death auditing. Some medical specialists proudly highlighted the main actions performed in their hospitals based on their findings from regular death review meetings and discussed their future plan. All participants agreed that the JSANDS system and neonatal death auditing should be scaled up and implemented to include all hospitals in the country.
